The DART & Its Derivatives
The BMFA DART is a simple rubber powered aircraft with a wingspan of 30 cm. It is derived from an American design. Millions have been successfully built and flown since its introduction in the USA in 1968. The DART has many unique features that ensure that it flies well, in fact a survey
carried out in America clams that 98% of all Darts fly.
The DART can be flown in a school sports hall or outdoors on a calm dry day. This model is the ‘corner stone’ of the British Model Flying
Association education programme and can be built and flown by a 9 year old under supervision.

The BMFA run the Flight Challenge contest using the Flight Challenge Dart artwork. This is similar to the Centenary Dart artwork, shown on the right, this commemorated the 100th Anniversary of powered man carrying flight. The Flight Challenge artwork on the wings depicts the 1903 Wright Flyer and the Eurofighter.
As expected it flies just as well as the standard BMFA Dart. Cost is the same as the standard Dart.

The DART can be produced with different artwork on the Plan/Covering.
The BMFA DART has been used by various organisations for
promotional work. Recently special DARTS have been produced for Loughborough University and Bombardier (to celebrate their 100th
anniversary).
The customer will have to produce their own artwork. Sky Hi Products have produced a blank DART plan and guidance notes to aid the
production of the artwork. This can be supplied on request.
The customer will bear the cost of the printers plates and what ever
special requirements are needed as regards inks. If colour separation is provided with artwork this cost will be in the region of £300.
A minimum of 500 Plan/Coverings can be produced. However with the printers high set-up costs a print run of 2000 is more practical. Sky Hi will buy the printed plans and the customer orders the kits as required.

The next step after the Dart
A constructive comment from a Teacher at the 2008 Association for
Science Education Meeting encouraged us to design the models below as stepping stones between the BMFA Dart and the more advanced Gyminnie Cricket and BMFA Frog models.
The BMFA VULCAN was inspired by the Avro aircraft of the same name. The BMFA VULCAN is a 36 cm. wingspan, rubber powered model and is made in a similar way to the BMFA DART. However the wing structure has to be built with more care especially when it comes to cutting the angles to the strips of wood that make up the wing framework. Trimming the model for best flight performance is a little harder than the BMFA DART because the model is tailless. To aid the initial setting of
the elevons setting blocks are provided. As this model flies best
turning right, a trim tab is also provided in this kit.

The BMFA ARROW is a 49.5 cm
wingspan, rubber powered model
that is made in the same way as
the BMFA DART. The triangular
flying surfaces reduce the effects of
any warping or twisting that may
happen just as in the Dart design
with the decreased wing loading
The flying performance is between
the Dart and the Gyminni Cricket.
Also the construction complexity has
been designed to be between the
Dart and the Gyminnie Cricket.

Promotional “Snap Together Models”
The SKY HI HAWK is an all balsa rubber powered model specially designed to be assembled with no tools or glue. It has been designed for promotional work and can be supplied with your logo on the port wing. The logo has to be in a single colour. There is a one off charge of £30 for the purchase of a stamp and a minimum order requirement of 50 models.
Each model is individually packed in its own gripseal bag labelled specially for your organisation. The model has a wingspan of 34.8 cm (13.7”).
